Political newcomer Subrina Banks didn’t accomplish her goal of defeating incumbent Congressional District 5 Congresswoman Stephanie Bice in the June 28th Republican primary. Bice defeated Banks by 69% to 31% margin; however, a review of precinct-level results by The Logan County News suggests Banks made inroads with South and East Logan County voters.

Banks registered 43% of the vote at several South Logan County precincts including Seward Road Baptist Church, Woodcrest Baptist Church, Oak Cliff Fire Station #1 and Guthrie Christian Church, and tallied 42% at several others.

Banks’ strongest Logan County result came from Logan County’s Precinct 203, which votes at the Elks Lodge on Waterloo and includes the town of Meridian and much of East Logan County. Here, Banks won the vote outright with 53% of the vote.

In total, Banks exceeded her district-wide performance of 31% in 21 of the 25 Logan County precincts that lie within the congressional district. In 13 of these precincts Banks tallied in excess of 40%.

This was Bice’s first appearance on the local ballot. In 2021, the legislative redistricting process drew the southern half of Logan County, including Cedar Valley, Cashion, Coyle, Guthrie and Langston into the 5th Congressional District. The move was believed by many to be an attempt by The Legislature to shore up the district for the Republicans. In 2018, Democrat Kendra Horn won the district, only to be defeated by Bice two years later.

While the Legislature appears to have accomplished its goal of securing Bice’s position on the general election ballot, Banks’ strong Logan County performance suggests Bice may have vulnerabilities on the primary ballot, particularly amongst district’s new, more-rural, conservative-minded primary voters.

Having received the Republican nomination, Bice will appear on the November 8th general election ballot alongside Democrat Joshua Harris-Till and Independent David Frosch.
